The number of bankrupt debtors in Spain decreases its annual rate by 5.0% in the third quarter of 2018

The number of bankrupt debtors decreases its annual rate by 5.0% in the third quarter of 2018, according to the last figures released by INE (National Statistics Institute).

During the third quarter of 2018, the number of bankrupt debtors reached 1,079 representing a 5.0% decrease, as compared with the same period of the previous year.

By type of bankruptcy, 1,002 were voluntary (6.9% less than the third quarter 2017) and 77 were necessary (28.3% more). Considering the type of procedure, ordinary procedures decreased 25.9%, and abbreviated procedures did so by 2.2%.

Evolution of the quarterly rate

To contribute to the analysis and interpretation of the data, the following chart shows the quarterly variation of the number of bankrupt debtors between the third and the second quarter in the last five years. In 2018 the quarterly rate was -33.0%, the lowest for the period in question.

Bankrupt companies by legal nature and turnover bracket

Among the 1,079 bankrupt debtors in the third quarter, 778 were companies (natural persons with business activity and legal persons), and 301 were natural persons without business activity, representing 72.1% and 27.9%, respectively of the total debtors.

In the third quarter of 2018, the number of bankrupt companies decreased 3.6%, as compared with the same period of the previous year.

By legal nature, 79.0% of bankrupt companies were Private Limited Companies. 34.8% of bankrupt companies were within the lowest turnover bracket (up to 250,000 euros) and were mainly Private Limited Companies.

Bankrupt companies by economic activity and number of employees

23.8% of bankrupt companies had Trade as their main economic activity and 15.8% had Construction. Regarding the number of employees, 55.8% of the total number of bankrupt companies had less than six. Among these, 32.9% had no employees.
